Katy's story

Katy

Careers support helped Katy to successfully apply for her ideal course at college.

At 15, Katy was uncertain about her future. She knew from a young age that she wanted to pursue a career in sports.

Katy shared: “I also knew I didn't want to stay for sixth form. I just wanted a change of scenery, to do something new.”

Coming up with a plan

Seeking guidance, Katy turned to Claire, her school’s careers adviser, for support.

Katy said: “I knew what direction I wanted to go in but felt stuck with where to start. Claire really helped me to explore my options.”

Claire showed Katy various options that were available to her, using resources like the Careers Wales website and UCAS.

They researched colleges and courses that matched Katy's interests. Katy was instantly drawn to the idea of studying sports and exercise science at Loughborough College.

Claire sent Katy all the information they had gathered and encouraged her to think about the options and speak to her parents.

Taking the leap

Katy admitted: “My parents were initially surprised, but they became very supportive.”

She added: “Claire’s encouragement was invaluable. She told me where to start and to go for it. She believed in me and that boosted my confidence.”

Katy attended a few college events to meet some people from the school and see the teachers.

Excited about her future, Katy plans to pursue sports psychology or sports science at university, depending on which area she enjoys the most during her college studies.

Katy said: “I’m much more enthusiastic about my future now. I was never really a type of a person to be enthusiastic about school and college but now I’m really excited to see what it all brings.”

Final thoughts

Reflecting on her experience, Katy emphasized the importance of seeking advice and being open to new opportunities.

“Claire was amazing. I encourage everyone to speak to their careers adviser. It can make a real difference.”

She recommends: “Get some advice and see what your options are. Just be brave and go for the best option. Even if it seems daunting.”
