Mason’s story

Mason

Mason secured an apprenticeship and feels confident about his next steps after GCSEs.

As results day approached, Mason felt unsure about what his options would be after leaving school.

Mason said, “At first, I felt very limited. I thought college was my only option, even though I wanted an apprenticeship.”

Finding the confidence to ask for support

Mason met with Rebecca, the careers adviser based at his school. Together, they talked about his interests and what options were available after school. Mason shared that his goal was to work in public service one day.

Mason said, “I’ve always wanted to do an apprenticeship. I tried to find some online and applied by myself, but I wasn’t successful.”

Rebecca helped him identify and search for apprenticeships that matched his interests. She also encouraged him to apply for opportunities he might not have considered on his own.

They worked together to search and apply for apprenticeships, while also keeping college as a back up option.

Mason said, “Rebecca really helped me narrow things down and find apprenticeships I could apply for.

“She helped me put myself out there instead of keeping everything to myself.”

Taking steps towards his goal

Mason continued applying for apprenticeships with more confidence, with ongoing support and encouragement from Rebecca. They met regularly and shared apprenticeship opportunities.

Following this Mason secured an apprenticeship with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), where he will be working in pensions.

Mason said, “This is a good opportunity for me to grow and develop my skills.

“I feel like I’ve achieved something really good. I definitely feel like I have a brighter future ahead now.”

His advice to others

Mason wants other young people to know that support is available and that there is more than one path forward.

He said, “Having support really opened my options for what I could do in the future.”
