Allen was working part-time night shifts in a retail store but the role wasn’t suitable for him. He was recommended to Working Wales by a friend.
The first step
After reaching out, Allen was given an appointment with careers adviser, Suzanne.
They discussed Allen’s difficulties with his current job, including limited travel options and him not enjoying the role.
After a conversation about Allen’s career ideas, Suzanne supported Allen to explore his interest in becoming a forklift operator.
The path to success
Suzanne helped Allen to apply for a forklift driving course, which he completed and became certified within a week.
Whilst waiting to find the right forklift role, Allen felt it was a good idea for him to get some production experience.
With support, he applied successfully for a production operative job at Village Bakery. Suzanne helped Allen with completing his CV and applying for the role.
They also looked at Allen’s qualifications, and Suzanne referred him to a course to complete his English and Maths GCSEs to enhance his future job prospects.
Tailored support
Suzanne’s support has been personalised and tailored to Allen. He has a speech impediment, and Suzanne has supported this through joining calls with employers and helping to improve his confidence.
Allen said: “Since I’ve been meeting with Suzanne, she’s been so helpful.
“If I hadn’t come to Working Wales, I’d still be stuck in my previous job where I wasn’t happy.
“Suzanne helped me with applications, phone calls, interviews and it’s been so useful to me.
“My mental health has improved so much, and I’m also having other support for this.”
Looking forward
With current support from Suzanne, Allen is aiming to fulfil his ambitions and gain a forklift driving role.
He is looking for opportunities and has Suzanne by his side to help him with his next steps.
He added: “I am so glad I came to see Suzanne. I felt stuck before, but she has helped me with so much.”
