Evelyn's story

Image of Evelyn

Evelyn discovered her passion for media thanks to an inspiring teacher during her GCSE and A-Levels.

Although she enjoyed studying media studies, she wanted to learn more about the subject in the workplace and through practical experience.

Apprenticeship at the BBC

When leaving school, Evelyn decided to apply for an apprenticeship at BBC Wales, and through Sgil Cymru she is now working in the creative production department and earning while she learns.

Despite being confident in her decision to learn on the job, Evelyn still wondered if she should have taken the same path as her friends.

“Before I started the apprenticeship, I was worried that if I didn’t go to university, I would be missing out on the experience. However, since starting my apprenticeship, I still get to see my friends who went to university and participate in social activities with them.

No two days are the same

In her current role, Evelyn works with a small creative team and has had the opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects.

“I really enjoy the range of different jobs, and no two days are the same!”

She has also had the opportunity to learn directly from peers in the industry. “I get to work with industry experts every day. The people around me have so much knowledge about production. It’s been great to work with and learn from them. I even got to sit in a BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show with Greg James!

“Working in the creative production department, some of my role includes helping the team create trailers for programmes. It’s amazing seeing my own work on TV. I watched a trailer for the women’s Euros a few weeks ago and I was able to say, ‘I made that!”.

Practical learning

Through an apprenticeship, Evelyn has found a career path that suits her best. “I want people to know that there are lots of options that are worth exploring. Classroom style learning and exam assessments are not for everyone, there are other ways to gain experience and knowledge.”

“For me, the practical learning offered through an apprenticeship works better.”

“It’s been amazing to be paid to learn on the job too! Because of this, I am learning other important life skills, such as managing my own finances, and I’ve been able to save up money.”

Halfway through her apprenticeship, Evelyn has no doubts that she made the right decision.

“Doing an apprenticeship has opened my eyes to how many different careers there are and has broadened my horizons.”
