Molly’s story

Molly regained her confidence and found the right role in healthcare.

Molly lives in Newport. She is a registered nurse and had been working in healthcare. Over time, she noticed the work began to affect her wellbeing.

Molly said, “It wasn’t that I didn’t want to be a nurse. But my confidence had been knocked, and I felt quite unsure about what to do next.”

Finding support

After speaking with a close friend, Molly decided to seek careers advice. She booked an appointment with Working Wales.

She said, “I was looking for a bit of support and some confidence again, even just to start thinking about applying for roles.”

Molly met with a careers adviser, Ross, at the Newport careers centre. Ross supported her to reflect on what she wanted from her career and what mattered most to her.

She said, “The conversations helped me see what was important to me. I realised I still wanted to work in healthcare. Being a nurse is a privilege, and I didn’t want one experience to derail my career.”

Taking action

With support, Molly reviewed her CV, refined her personal statements and began applying for roles.

She also received interview preparation support from employability coach John, who helped her focus on clearly presenting her professional experience.

Molly said, “He helped me really understand what employers are looking for. Not just who I am as a person, but my professional experience and why I wanted the role.”

A positive outcome

Molly’s hard work paid off when she was offered a new nursing role on the same day as her interview.

She said, “I was still in the room when they offered me the job. I was over the moon.”

Moving forward

Molly now feels positive and hopeful about her future. She is looking forward to settling into her new role and continuing to grow in her nursing career.

She said, “It actually feels like I’m coming home. I’m excited again about where my career can go.”

She also has longer term goals, including combining clinical work with research in the future.

Molly said, “I’m excited to be busy again. My long term goal is a clinical academic role, but for now I’m focused on being the best emergency department nurse I can be.”

Advice to others

Reflecting on her journey, Molly encourages others who feel unsure or unhappy at work to seek support.

She said, “Break things down into small steps. Be curious, and get advice from someone who can guide you.

“Ross and John from Working Wales were both amazing in different ways. They believed in me and supported me when I really needed it.”

She added, “Confidence isn’t just a feeling. It’s about doing the thing, even when you feel anxious.”
