At 25, Lowri from Brecon has already turned her passion into a thriving business.
"I wanted to work for myself"
After studying textiles at university and working in the industry for two years, she realised that the traditional 9-to-5 wasn’t for her. “I wanted more freedom, more flexibility and the chance to earn more doing something I love,” she explained.
In April 2024, Lowri launched her own bespoke furnishings business with support from a Business Wales Young Person's Start Up Grant. She now creates made-to-measure curtains, blinds and soft furnishings for clients across Wales and beyond.
Finding her own path
Lowri’s journey into self-employment came from a desire to take control of her future. She said: “I think a lot of young people feel they have to wait until they’re older or more established to start a business. But if you’ve got the skills and the drive, you can do it now.”
She’s passionate about encouraging others to explore entrepreneurship earlier in life as part of the options available under the Welsh Government’s Young Person’s Guarantee. “There’s support out there, you just need to ask for it. I wouldn’t be where I am without the help I got at the start.”
Looking ahead
Lowri is already thinking about the next stage of her business. With demand growing, she’s planning to expand into upholstery, especially as upcycling becomes more popular. “People are really into giving old furniture a new lease of life, and I love being part of that movement. It’s a great way of making something unique and creative, which is what I’m passionate about.”
She’s also open to the idea of hiring in the future. “It’s exciting to think I could create opportunities for others too. That’s something I’d love to do as the business grows.”
"You don't need to fit into a mould"
With results day approaching, Lowri has some advice for young people thinking about their next steps:
You don’t have to follow the same path as everyone else. If there’s something you’re passionate about, go for it. There’s support out there, and you’ve got time to figure things out, so don’t feel like you have to have it all sorted straight away.”
