Support from a careers adviser helped Joseff feel confident about his next steps.
Joseff, 16, lives in the Llandderfel area. He knew he wanted to do something in sport but was unsure about what to do next.
He said: “I had picked my GCSE subjects, but I felt that they didn’t really go with each other and wouldn’t lead to any specific career path. I didn’t know what I would be doing in college or sixth form.”
Getting support
Joseff heard about Careers Wales when careers adviser, Guto, visited his school. Guto explained how he could help with choosing courses and applying for college. He talked through Joseff’s interests and how different course options could support his goals. This helped Joseff decide on the right mix of practical and academic subjects.
He said: “Guto helped me apply for college and pick a course I was really happy with. He also helped me talk to the college about how I could do both a BTEC and an A level.”
Choosing the right course
Joseff chose to do a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport alongside A level Biology. He wanted to study sport in a practical way, but also needed the right entry requirements for university.
He said: “The BTEC was more practical and had less exams, which suits the way I learn. We also looked at the entry requirements for the university I wanted to go to and planned how I could get there.”
Making a plan
Joseff continued to meet with Guto to help with his future planning. They made a plan together based on what grades Joseff expected to get and what he needed for the future.
He said: “It made me feel more confident about what I was going to be doing in further education. I now have a clear plan.”
Looking ahead
Joseff feels positive about his results and his next steps. He hopes to go to university after college but is also open to exploring options as he studies.
He said: “I think I will get good grades, and I want to see what opportunities will open up.”
Joseff encourages other young people to get help if they are unsure.
He said: “Guto was very helpful and answered all my questions in a simple way I could understand.”
