Ciaran’s story

Finding the right path through experience has helped Ciaran build his confidence.

Ciaran, 19, is now working as a hospital porter at Llandough Hospital, where no two days are ever the same. But after finishing school, he wasn’t completely sure what his future would look like.

Support from school

“I was nervous at the start, but I just took things as they came and went with the flow,” Ciaran said.

Like many young people, Ciaran did not have everything mapped out straight away.

“When I finished school, I wasn’t completely sure what I wanted to do, so I stayed open to different opportunities and gave things a try. That helped me build confidence, and it showed me that there are lots of different paths you can take.”

With the support of his Careers Wales adviser at school, Ciaran gained valuable work experience within a real working environment. He completed three different 10-week placements at the Heath Hospital, Cardiff. It was there he discovered his enjoyment of portering.

“My careers adviser helped me get onto Project SEARCH. From there I had different placements which gave me experience and confidence.”

Gaining experience

Before starting his role in the hospital, Ciaran also explored other opportunities. This included working in a café and gaining hands-on experience in different settings. These experiences helped him develop a wide range of transferable skills and better understand his strengths and interests.

“Trying different experiences helped me build my confidence and get used to working. That made a big difference.”

Starting work

Now working in the NHS, Ciaran plays an important role supporting both patients and staff. From moving equipment to helping patients around the hospital, his work is varied and rewarding.

“It’s different every day, and I really enjoy it,” he said.

Ciaran particularly values the opportunity to interact with patients. He enjoys making a positive difference to their day.

“I like talking to patients and helping people, even small conversations can make a difference.”

Since starting his job Ciaran has grown in confidence and independence. This is something of which he is proud.

“I feel a lot more confident now than I did in school. I am more independent and can get on with my work.”

Looking towards the future

Looking ahead, Ciaran hopes to continue building his experience and progress within his role, while remaining open to future opportunities.

For young people across Wales preparing to receive their results, Ciaran’s message is clear – there is no need to have everything figured out straight away.

“Don’t be worried about your results. Take your time and focus on your next step.

“There are lots of different options out there, and if you’re not sure what to do, there are people who can help you.”
