With support, Abigail built her confidence and planned her next steps to university.
Abigail, 17, is currently studying Biology, Chemistry, Maths and the Welsh Baccalaureate. She is hoping to take the next step in her education by studying Biology at Oxford University. With Results Day approaching, she is trying to stay focused and not let nerves take over.
An early interest
“I am hoping to study Biology at university. After visiting on an open day, it has always been something I’ve been excited about.” Abigail explained.
Growing up on a farm, Abigail was surrounded by biology in everyday life. That early exposure, combined with her studies in school, has shaped her ambitions.
“Living on the farm has meant my whole life has been shaped by biology and the natural world. School has deepened my interest and made me want to take it further.”
Considering options
While applying to a university like Oxford can feel daunting, Abigail says her decision to came from wanting to keep her options open. “I wasn’t completely sure what I wanted to do long-term. University felt like the right option to learn new skills without committing to one specific career.”
Throughout her journey, Abigail has explored a range of opportunities to help her make informed decisions about her future.
“I learned about different options, including apprenticeships and university. This helped me understand what might be right for me.”
Building confidence and experience
With support from her school and family, Abigail has been able to build her confidence and experience.
“My school has been a big support. They have helped me with my personal statement and prepared me for interviews.
“I have also had opportunities to visit universities and take part in projects. This has built my confidence.”
Outside of the classroom, Abigail has also developed valuable transferable skills. She has been involved in her local Young Farmers Club, helping her prepare for the future.
“Being part of Young Farmers has helped me develop skills like public speaking, teamwork and confidence. This will really help at university.”
Looking ahead
Thinking about her future, Abigail is excited about continuing her studies. She is also looking forward to the wider experience that university can offer.
“I’m excited to deepen my understanding of biology, but also to meet new people. I want to join societies and experience something new.”
At the same time, she admits that taking such a big step comes with its own challenges.
“I’m a bit nervous about moving away from home, especially as it’s quite far, but I’m also really excited.”
Abigail is keen to remind others that there is no single path to success.
“Do not stress. Be proud of the hard work you have put in. If you don’t get the results you were hoping for, remember that there are other options available.”
“Work hard and stay determined. Take every opportunity that comes your way, whether that’s academic or something different.”
