At 16, Oscar Dwyer from Llanrumney, Cardiff, is already taking his first steps into the world of work.
“I knew I wanted to learn by doing”
After finishing his GCSEs this summer, he’s preparing to start a fabrication apprenticeship with Dudley’s Aluminium in September, a decision that reflects his hands-on approach to learning and long-term goals.
Choosing the right path
“I’m a practical learner,” he says. “I wanted to get straight into something where I could learn by doing.”
After discussing the different pathways with his parents, Oscar decided an apprenticeship would be the best route. He spoke to a Careers Wales adviser in March, and that conversation helped him narrow down his options and find the right opportunity for him.
“That conversation started everything. My adviser helped me see what was possible, apply for the right course and supported me with the interview. That support meant the world.”
A future in fabrication and beyond
Oscar will begin his fabrication apprenticeship in September, and he’s excited to get started. “I chose fabrication because it’s a skill that’ll always be in demand. It’s a trade that builds the world around us.”
He’s also thinking ahead: “I’m already thinking ahead to beyond my apprenticeship, I’d love to train as an electrician one day too. The more trades I can learn, the more opportunities there will be to carve out a career for myself that I enjoy.”
Oscar recently completed his GCSEs and is feeling positive about how they went. “I’d studied hard, so some of the exams felt easier than I had expected they would be. I think I’ve done well in some of my favourite subjects like English and also in PE because sport is a huge passion for me.
“Knowing I have my apprenticeship secured in September has made my parents really proud of me and means I can already start looking forward to what’s next.”
Support that made the difference
Oscar’s experience with his Careers Wales adviser gave him the confidence to take the next step. “They helped me figure out what I wanted to do and supported me through the whole process and I know I can go back to them any time if I need more advice.”
With results day on the horizon and an apprenticeship lined up, Oscar is ready to start the next chapter. “I’m looking forward to getting stuck in, this is just the beginning."
